The Super Caster

In addition to the composition caster, Monotype produced another model of casting machine, known as the Super Caster.
Introduced from 1928, it allowed the creation of different material: typefaces from body 14 to body 72, furniture, leadign, and spaces of different sizes and thicknesses. The operating system of a Super Caster was simpler than that of the composing machine, as it did not have a keyboard. It was mainly used to cast single characters of a type or furniture, without setting words in a justified line. The Super Caster requires the insertion of only one matrix at a time into the die holder: the holder is thus held in a fixed position and performs only one movement of approaching and receding vertically from the nozzle that sprays the lead. The numbers on the side of the die indicate some important data: the character code (unique for the Monotype system), the body, the width of the individual glyph.
